Rain, like tears, is falling. Rain is almost a daily occurence in Singapore. 2008 began with my depression, anxiety and anger taking the "front-seat" in my relationship with my family. By February I had left our home, was living isolated in a foreign country and losing those closest to me.

Chaos and confusion filled my life at this time. The clippings are taken from Chinese language newspapers published in Singapore.

The Chinese Window Series is one of several experiments into the fusion of Asian and Western concepts, design and techniques. The graphics used in these paintings are translated from traditional window screen designs from China. The window screens formed a privacy screen that allows light and fresh air into the home or the shophouse.

The complexity of these window screen designs have their origins in the belief that "bad ghosts"; associated with chaos, illness, and bad luck, become confused by the multitude of angles and cannot enter . Also, the complexity keeps "good ghosts"; associated with harmony, health, and good luck, on the inside of the home, business, or temple.

As China modernizes its housing, many traditional neighborhoods have been destroyed to make room for hi-rise apartments and condominiums. Architectural details, such as wooden window screens, are salvaged and can be found in antique galleries in Singapore.

These paintings were executed in Singapore between February and April 2008.

Outside is black, but inside is colored with the rememberance of Redbud, Cherry and Tulip blossoms. I am yearning to return to my home in Cincinnati.

The traditional colors associated with celebrations are used. These high-key colors are seen on posters, flags, banners, paper sculptures, and parade floats during Chinese New Year. They are used for the celebrations of popular saints and funerals, too.
